Junior Development Program (Thursdays and Sundays)
What will I learn on ice in Junior Development?
In Junior Development we will work largely on the fundamental skills of figure skating. We will work on gaining greater balance and strength through various activities and will improve our forwards and backwards crossovers, stroking and glides. Skaters will learn the primary figure skating jumps (such as waltz jumps, salcows, and toe loops) and spins that they will continue to use throughout their skating career, as well as field movements like spirals and drags. Upon completion of the Junior Development Program (which may take several sessions), skaters may be invited to attend the STARSkate program.
Junior Development Off Ice Program:
This class will cover an introduction to jump technique, spin positions, and flexibility. Off ice training helps skaters progress in their on-ice skill development. It is held just before the ice sessions on Sundays from 4:00-4:30 PM and on Thursdays from 5:00-5:45 PM. Please come dressed in athletic clothing and running shoes.
Skaters' Etiquette
- Arrive on time
- Hair must be tied back away from face
- Skating attire must be worn – no jeans, bobby pins, winter jackets etc.
- Skaters must get up promptly after a fall, unless seriously injured.
- Skaters who are in a lesson or performing their program to music have the right of way
- No standing in the middle of the ice
- Promote good sportsmanship by encouraging fellow skaters and respecting their work time on the ice.
- During individual practice time, spins should be done towards the middle of the ice and jumps to the perimeter.
What comes next?
Skaters that progress though Junior Development that are interested in exploring figure skating further are able to join our Star Stake / Competitive program.
